The celebrated hotelier Ian Schrager has announced his intention to open a new chain of hotels in Chicago. The hotel chain will be known simple as “Public,” and its first property will open in downtown Chicago sometime this fall.
According to Schrager, Public will be as inclusive and accessible as possible. Middle class families, couples, and individuals will be able to afford each and every room offered by the hotel chain. They will also be able to take advantage of the luxury services typically characteristic of far more expensive hotels.
In order to make this low-budget luxury possible, Schrager intends to do away with unnecessary and unappreciated guests services. He likely intends, for instance, to eliminate services like 24-hour concierge help and daily linen changes, although Schrager has declined to go into the specifics of his proposal just yet.
It remains to be seen just how successful these Public hotels will be, but Schrager has certainly generated a lot of buzz about this upcoming project, and his earlier hotel ventures have all been overwhelmingly successful, so it stands to reason that Public could end up becoming something of a Chicago institution.
